Today we’re talking about embracing failure, building resilience, and achieving any goal we set out to accomplish.

Resiliency is finding that place inside of you that won’t give up, regardless of the setbacks or circumstances. That place inside of you that says, “This is not going to defeat me. I’m going to figure it out.” My guest, Eric DeVine, has truly been a poster boy of resiliency for the majority of his life.

Coming from a tough financial background growing up, his first entrepreneurial attempt was just to help his mom pay the bills. At age 9, Eric began looking for ways that he could contribute to the monthly expenses, and he went on to start several businesses as a teenager.

By the time he was 23, he and his brother, Greg, were buying their first property, and they eventually jumped into real estate investing full-time, building a tremendous real estate portfolio together. Today, the DeVine brothers are focused on teaching financial literacy and encouraging entrepreneurs to reach their goals. They do this through online coaching and their YouTube Channel: The DeVine Way TV, which was an idea that came to life during the pandemic.

Today, Eric joins me to discuss the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, why mental maintenance is vital to anything we want to achieve in life, and the importance of embracing our failures, having a positive mindset, and developing resilience.

“Let’s embrace our failures, because we all have them. It’s how you overcome those failures that separates you from the person you want to be, in a lot of cases, versus where you’re at.”  –  Eric DeVine

Eric DeVine was born in 1977 in San Antonio, Texas, the son of a hard-working special education teacher, and a father who was one of the first African-Americans to be hired as an engineer by IBM.

Eric grew up with an entrepreneurial spirit. Watching his single mother raise three children, at age 9 he began looking for ways he could contribute to the monthly expenses. (He would later learn in therapy that this was called a “parentified child.”)

Starting his first lawn mowing service before the fifth grade, Eric would go on to start several businesses as a teen. When his mom encouraged him to get a real job, he learned he wasn’t built to be a regular employee… by getting fired from approximately 18 jobs.

Eric had a proud father who would preach the value of owning real estate. So, at the ages of 23 and 26, brothers Eric and Greg purchased their first property in Dallas, Texas. After the dot com economic collapse, they moved to Oakland, California to dive full-time into real estate.

By 2004, the DeVine brothers bought their first Four-Plex in East Oakland. With a hyper-focused vision towards retirement through investing, they managed to not only survive the great recession in 2008, but also build a tremendous real estate portfolio. Their success included their colleagues and friends, who had come to them for investing help.

Today, the DeVine brothers are focused on teaching financial literacy and encouraging entrepreneurs to reach their goals. They do this through online coaching, and their YouTube Channel: The DeVine Way TV. This encompasses real estate, along with general investment knowledge and business acumen. Eric and Greg believe in the Devine Way: Follow the numbers, stick to the plan, invest in your future.

“Trying to become the dream version of yourself is hard enough. It’s even harder when you allow people in your mental space that are negative, hateful, spiteful, or just have a bad outlook on life. It’s hard to get to where you want to go if you’re carrying those people’s energy with you.”  –  Eric DeVine
