Today we discuss the many dimensions of grief being experienced in the business community.

Join Paula Shaw to talk about Business Grief, which she will be discussing with Anthony McIntosh, President and Founder of SSE Advisors LLC, a business advisory and consulting firm. Paula and Anthony discuss how the dimensions of grief are impacting business today, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s tricky times for many businesses, and even those that are surviving are dealing with the loss of the way it used to be. No one knows for sure what the future holds, and for many businesses, this could spell disaster.

One of the most challenging parts of grief is longing for what we had, “how it used to be,” and “the reality we once knew.” How often these days do you hear people say, “I just want life to get back to normal”?

We want the comfort of the familiar. We want what most of us have known all of our lives. Handshakes, crowded parties, bars, the buzz of many people chatting in a restaurant, seeing a movie we are excited about on a big screen in a theater, and gathering in our places of worship with others.

My parents in their nineties have known these things their entire lives. Now, at a time when they know that there probably aren’t twenty or thirty years in front of them, we’re asking them to stay home and not see their friends or take a drive for lunch or visit family. It’s very tough for them. They are grieving. We all are, and businesses aren’t exempt from this reality. Let’s step back a minute and talk about GRIEF.

Grief is a huge compendium of emotions that can occur when loss has taken place. The very topic of this show, CHANGE, is a source of grief. For change to occur, loss must also occur. If something new is coming, something old has to get out of the way… that equals loss. And with loss comes pain. Something comfortable and familiar is gone, and the discomfort of the new unknown equals pain.

This pandemic has created loss on many levels… School has changed, shopping has changed, grocery stores have changed, restaurants have changed. Coffee shops and bars and other gathering places have changed. There is a lot of loss out there.

My guest today, Anthony McIntosh, is a business expert, and we will be talking about the grief being experienced in the business community. We will be discussing many dimensions of business grief.

WE ARE ALL GRIEVERS AT THIS TIME, AND WE HAVE ALL LOST OUR LIVES AS WE KNEW THEM. WE HAVE HAD TO GET QUIET AND STILL AND REALLY LOOK AT A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE WERE AVOIDING BEFORE.

HOW DO WE DEAL WITH OUR GRIEF? 5 STEPS…

1. FEEL THE FEELINGS AND PROCESS THEM through journaling, talking it out, and other processes

2. ALLOW YOURSELF THE TIME TO GO INSIDE AND SEE WHAT YOU REALLY NEED AND WANT

3. LOOK AT ANY CHANGES THAT NEED TO BE MADE

4. IMPLEMENT THOSE CHANGES

5. COURSE CORRECT AS YOU GO
