Today we are going to change it up by having a panel of men discussing male sexuality and some of the pitfalls that many men these days are falling into as a result of changing times.

Special guests Joshua Shea and Tony Overbay join us today to discuss the ever-growing problem of pornography addiction, the psychological pain that often leads to addictive behaviors, and why we need to be able to talk more openly about addiction and mental health so that people can get the help they need to live happier, healthier lives.

We Discuss:

  • Male sexuality and the pitfalls that men are falling into as a result of the changing times
  • The unreconciled loss that is often buried underneath addictive behaviors
  • The magnitude of pornography addiction in our culture today
  • How pornography is used just as substances are in the form of a soothing mechanism
  • Why men (and women) are turning to pornography and how it affects them
  • Substituting positive behavior for addictive behavior
  • Why we need to remove the negative stigma and address these problems with our children
  • The importance of speaking out and letting others know you suffer from pain and addiction
  • Becoming comfortable in our own skin so that we can enjoy our lives
  • How someone can recover from a pornography addiction and why it’s so critical to get help

I knew right then and there, the first time I saw hardcore pornography, that this was something that was going to stay with me and was going to be a soothing mechanism my entire life and that’s really what it was.”  –  Joshua Shea

About Joshua:

Joshua Shea is a freelance writer and former magazine publisher from Auburn, Maine. He started working in journalism at just 17 years old.

He is the father of two great kids and husband to a wonderful wife.

On the outside, people saw a successful magazine publisher, film festival founder, and city councilor.

For a long time, Josh hid his mental health issues and pornography and alcohol addictions from the world.

In 2014, he was charged with possession of child pornography after taking a screen capture of a teen girl in an online chatroom.

He served six months in jail for it in 2016.

Today, Josh works as an author and speaker/presenter with several years of sobriety under his belt. His book about addiction can be found here.

Josh believes that if we can begin to talk more about porn addiction and mental health, others may be able to address their addictions before they devolve to the unhealthy and criminal places where his hit rock bottom.

About Tony:

Tony Overbay is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a Certified Mindful Habit Coach (CMHC), and a popular motivational speaker.

He regularly speaks at corporate training events, schools, and churches in both formal and casual settings, mixing humor, clinical experience, his Christian faith, and a wealth of personal stories gleaned from years of helping others achieve their goals.

Tony currently has a very busy practice in Northern California, which led to the creation of the Path Back as a way to spread the word that hope and recovery are possible to more than those who he can see in his office.

He works in a strength-based environment and has helped hundreds of individuals and couples discover lives that they always dreamed of having, or never knew they were capable of achieving.

Tony has been inspiring and educating both youth and adults for over 20 years on topics ranging from internet safety, overcoming pornography addiction and compulsive sexual behavior, couples issues, depression, anxiety, parenting, communication, goal setting and a number of other subjects.

“Men, in particular, have such a hard time being vulnerable and being open. I think a lot of that leads to this kind of isolation or trying to find these behaviors that will give the brain a nice rush, and then over time that becomes a pattern.”  –  Tony Overbay
