About John:

John Nastav was born in the far Southside of Chicago in the summer of 1946 to a family that would total eight children.

He graduated from high school in 1964 and immediately got a job at Republic Steel.

After a few months of seeing that working in the steel mills was not going to take him where he wanted his life to go, he applied to go back to school.

Since John applied so late, he was not able to get the courses that he wanted and had a hard time adjusting to college, so he decided to quit school.

It was only a few weeks later that he received a draft notice, and the next day he joined the Marines. John felt that he had found his calling and that he was finally going to get to live what he had dreamed.

John went on to serve three active tours in Vietnam as a Marine.

In his book, In Thy Mother’s Honor, he shares the trials of war, the effect on his mother, the effects in later life, and his struggles of dealing with the VA.

While in Vietnam I was injured multiple times and refused treatment at all of my injuries. By refusing the treatment from the corpsman or doctor at the time, no one would ever go to my mother’s door and let her know what had happened to me.”  –  John Nastav
